In this blog post, I will go over how to add media (photos, videos, and PDFs) to a WordPress website.  There are a lot of ways to do this, so I encourage you to play with your site and figure out which system works best for you.

First, let’s look at the Media tab.  You can find it by logging into the admin panel on your site and clicking on “Media” in the menu along the left side of your screen.  The “Media Library” page shows you a list of all the media that has been uploaded to your website.  It should look something like this:

Click on the thumbnail (small image) or name of an item to see more detailed information to view that item’s edit page.  At the top of the edit page is the title of your media.  The title is used by screen readers and for SEO (Search Engine Optimization).  On the right side of the page, in the “Save” box, you can see more information such as the file name, URL, type, and dimensions.  The “File URL” is very important if you want to link to the item from another page.

To add new media files, click on “Add New” below “Media” in the menu on the left.  On this page, you can either select the files you want to upload, or simply drag and drop them into the page.  You can upload multiple files at the same time.  To view the file’s edit page, click “Edit”.

Now, what if you wanted to add an image to a page?  WordPress makes that very simple.  When you are editing a page, click on the “Add Media” button above the main text area.  add mediaThis will open a window where you can either upload new media (similar to adding new media in the “Media” tab), or choose from previously uploaded media.  If you want to upload new media, click on “Upload Files” at the top of the window. When it is done uploading, WordPress will automatically select the items that you just uploaded.  If you want to choose media, click “Media Library” and select the files you want to add.

On the right side of the window are settings that change how the file is inserted.  If you are unsure of what you want, leave the default settings – you can always change it later.  When you are done, click “Insert into page” at the bottom.  Once an image is in the page, you can edit it by clicking on the image then clicking the picture icon on the left, or remove the image from the page by clicking the red icon on the right.

The steps to add a PDF link to a page is similar. Click “Add Media”, select the PDF or upload it, and click “Insert into page”.  A link to that PDF will be added to the page.  Changing what the link says is a little tricky.  By default, it will be whatever the title of the PDF is.  To change this, type your title inside the link, then remove the extra characters on both sides.

If you are looking to add a video to your website, we suggest using YouTube or Vimeo.  WordPress will automatically turn any YouTube video URL into an embedded version of that video.  If you use Vimeo, you can paste the embed code into the “Text” tab next to “Visual” above the main content area.

If you want to upload a video right into WordPress, you can do that too.  Upload it like a PDF or Image, and when you click “Insert into page”, some text will be added to the page that looks like the image on the right.  When you update or publish the page, WordPress will know to turn that code into a video.

These are the main ways to add media files to your site.  A few others include Featured Images, images for sliders, and files related to extra fields that we custom built into your site.  All SunAnt Interactive clients receive more detailed instructions on how to use these custom fields in their training session.  If you have any questions about WordPress, there are plenty of tutorials and forums online.  If you cannot find an answer to your question, feel free to comment below, and I will be happy to answer your question.
